Opals, especially Australian opal have gained huge popularity in the recent times. Jewelers across the world are selling this precious stone, with a huge price range. The immense difference in price along with the varieties in opals creates misleads the buyer.


Many opal shops sell these precious stones in a very low price creating confusing in the buyer’s mind, if the stone is original or fake. Here are few tips from experts for you to help you differentiate the original and real looking stones.

Few factors which help you recognize originals opals from fake ones are

  • A white body tone or a transparent stone can be said to be an original opal. White or crystal opals are said to have this texture. Doublets and triplets will have a dark colour look as they have a black artificial backing.

  • A natural opal will have less systematic patterns. Fake opals or synthetic opals will look perfect and manmade. Natural opals will have difference of colours and brightness across the stone. 

  • If you can see straight columns of colouring running vertically from the sides of the stone, then it is a synthetic precious stone. 

  • A natural opal will not have a perfect shape, not even the polished gem stone. Only fake opals will be able to have a perfect round or oval shape.

  • Most genuine opals will have irregularity in the sides, curvy or bumpy due to their natural formation.
