How Are Doublet Opals Different From Solid Stones?

Doublet opals and triplets are made by combining the precious stone with synthetic material. For a doublet, a thin layer of opal is stuck on a dark backing, giving an impression of a full piece of opal. It is mainly done to enhance opal colours and add strength and thickness to the colourful stone.

Australia opal is one of the costliest gemstones in the world. It is quite expensive. It is not possible for everyone town them. Opals are very delicate and they could break down by regular use.

The ark backing for the doublet can be ironstone, potch, plastic or other materials would not only increase the strength but also increase the beauty. These types of stones are less expensive and can be owned by common people. These doublets are used for hand-rings, earrings, pendants.

The other type of synthetics tones is the triplets, which is similar to the doublets but has an additional layer of quartz or glass on the top of the opal layer. Most of the synthetic material is made from 100% naturally occurring, but cannot be referred to as solid opals.

Opal solids are the most expensive ones from which the layers of doublet and triplet are cut. The lower-priced versions of opal will show less flashy colours than the solid stone.

Many websites deal with these stones and become very difficult for one person to differentiate between solid and synthetic stones.
