Know How South Sea Pearls Standout From Other Varieties

South sea pearls are exceptional quality pearls that are white or silver in colour. These pearls are larger than an average pearl. The pearls are smooth and have an almost perfect round shape. They are the most rarely found pearls.

Like Australian opals, south sea pearls are rare and unique. They come from oysters living in south sea areas such as Australia and China that have fresh and nutrient rich water. Since the size of the oysters is larger than an average oyster, the pearls are also larger.

These oysters are very rare to find. The cultivation and production charges are extremely high. These two reasons have made them quite expensive stones.

These precious stones are cultivated from Pinctada maxima oysters. These sea creatures are of two types silver-lipped and gold-lipped. The two varieties are distinguished by the colour on the outer edge of the interior of shell. These shells are known as mother-of-pearl, and are responsible for colouration of the pearls produced.

The main reasons for the pearl to go bigger in size are:

  • The large size of oyster
  • Size of implanted bead
  • Length of time the pearl is left to grow
  • The environment in which oyster grows

Generally, the South Seas are extremely clean and filled with plankton-favourite food of oyster. Clean water and abundant supply of oyster’s favourite food speeds up pearl production. These pearls are harvested for almost 2 years, while the average variety of harvested for 9-16 months.

Such precious stones must be bought from a trusted dealer to get genuine nad good quality products at affordable prices.
